About Hallam Mill
A short history
Hallam Mill (originally Heavily Mill) was built under the commission of Ephraim Hallam in the mid 19th century and began operating in 1859. Its purpose was to re-cycle waste cotton into a product which could be spun into 'candlewick', a loosely twisted cotton yarn used for making such things as tufted bedspreads, towels, and carpets.
After the death of Ephraim in 1897 the building was sold to Faulders a confectionery company, their sweet products were branded 'Squirrel', which in 1930 became the company name. The name can still be seen on the side of the building. Squirrel (Squirrel Horn) vacated the building in 1968
Since then various small businesses have occupied the mill, one notable being Moulin Rouge Music Studio which although perhaps lesser known than the nearby Strawberry Studios hosted many of Manchester's finest musicians, including The Happy Mondays, The Verve, Johnny Marr, The Doves and Badly Drawn Boy.
In 2010 I first opened the doors of Hallam Mill Studio (Truedefinition) . Originally used as a base to shoot products for my Wholesale Business, then with the decline of that Business I fully concentrated on developing the space as a Photo studio. It has since been used by some of the Worlds leading companies for film and stills. Clients include BBC, Netflix, Gucci, Adidas, Puma, Remington, The Hut Group, Aldi, GQ, Hello Magazine. Celebs who have been here include Michelle Keegan, Jack Grealish, Virgil Van Dyke and many more !
